Update about Medicaid and The Children’s Health Insurance Program

Children’s Health Insurance Program and Medicaid are mainly designed for the kids who belong to the families of low-income and adults with limited income ability. It is a health care program for the children whose families cannot afford costly health insurance. CHIP or Children’s Health Insurance Program and Medicaid provides essential health coverage to millions of Americans including children and families of low-earning group, pregnant women and the elderly people with disabilities.


In addition to that, Medicaid provides physical health care coverage. It also pays for long term services, like home and community-based services that allow people with disabilities to thrive and live self-sufficiently in their communities. Individuals with mental illnesses are also paid by Medicaid programs.


Medicaid is the largest health care coverage program in the United States that provides tremendous benefits with little or no costs. Some of the states have extended their Medicaid programs to provide coverage for all the people below certain income levels. This program is funded equally by federal government and states.


Feedback Systems


For past few months, the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services (CMCS) have developed a feedback system where they took input from a varied stakeholder about what went well and what not. What are the areas which needs improvement? These stake holders include advocates, health care, other safety net providers, and health plans providers. They have also heard from the families and individuals about their experience with Medicaid and CHIP.


Setting up the Priorities – Focus Areas


The policy agenda for CMCS have three core focus areas which include Coverage and access, Equity, Innovation and Whole Person Care. They are committed to pursue these agendas in more measurable way which also align with the larger vision of CMCS.


  • They are working in every possible way to increase the coverage of all the eligible people with provider availability, quality and other key components which shall reduce the gap of the coverage.

  • Health Equity is one of the key strategic priorities in CMSC. While considering the fact that Medicaid is driver of Equity in Health, but the fact and data shows us that there are noteworthy ethnic inequalities and racial discrimination within the Medicaid. They are committed to maintain the health equity with targeted evidence-based investments. Health Equity will be the lead for all the policy decision for Medicaid as confirmed by sources, and not a postscript.

  • CMCS will continue to find ways in innovating the value-based care system. Delivery systems reforms and whole person care under Medicaid. They are partnering with different states to ensure that the health care system supports the whole of a person needs which include Physical health, Mental Health, behavioral health, oral health, continued service and supports and health related social requirements.


CMCS has enrolled more than 80 millions of American for their health care coverage and health care systems.
